Bruce's HR in 11th carries Reds over Cubs

Baseball Betting Lines

09/15/2011 - Cincinnati, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning to vault the Reds over the Cubs, 8-6, in the finale of a four-game series.

Joey Votto doubled to begin the inning and Bruce followed with a blast to right to make a loser of James Russell (1-6).

The Cubs trailed 6-4 in the top of the ninth, but pinch-hitter Alfonso Soriano knocked in Tony Campana with his 400th career double and Darwin Barney tied the game with an RBI single.

Nick Masset (3-5) tossed a scoreless top of the 11th to earn the win for the Reds, who captured the final three games of the series.

Carlos Pena and Marlon Byrd both hit a first-inning, two-run homer off of Reds starter Homer Bailey, who allowed four runs over six innings while recording a season high-tying nine strikeouts.

Cubs starter Randy Wells surrendered five runs over 4 1/3 innings. He has not lost since July 28.

For the Reds, Brandon Phillips went 2-for-5 with a solo homer while Chris Heisey added a solo shot and capped a three-run fifth-inning with a go-ahead RBI single.

Trailing 4-2, Bailey began the fifth with a single and Phillips doubled to place runners at second and third. Drew Stubbs brought Bailey home with a base hit before a Votto walk loaded the bases. Wells walked Yonder Alonso to push across the tying run before giving way to Jeff Samardzija. Heisey's infield single, which deflected off of Samardzija, made it a 5-4 game.

The Reds added a run an inning later when Paul Janish walked, advanced to third on Stubbs' single and scored on John Gaub's wild pitch.

Jose Arrendondo and Bill Bray combined to toss two scoreless innings of relief before handing the ball to Francisco Cordero in the top of the ninth.

The pinch-hitting Campana led off with a single before Soriano ripped a two- bagger into the left field corner. Two batters later, Barney singled to tie the game.

In the first, Aramis Ramirez singled with two down and Pena unleashed a mammoth blast to center. The ball reached the deck of Great American Ball Park's riverboat, which resides beyond and above the center field wall.

Bryan LaHair followed with a single and Byrd made it a 4-0 game with a homer to left-center.

The Cubs loaded the bases with no outs in the third, but Homer settled, lining out Byrd before putting down Tyler Colvin and Koyie Hill on strikes to escape unscathed.

Given new life, the Reds responded. Homers by Phillips and Heisey in the third and fourth, respectively, cut the Cubs' advantage in half before the go- ahead fifth.

Game Notes

Bruce hit his third career walkoff home run...Soriano became the 167th player to reach 400 career doubles...Cordero suffered his sixth blown save of the season. He had converted 16 straight saves...Wells is 5-0 in nine starts since the beginning of August.

MySportsbook.com Releases World Series Championship Lines

New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox early favorites to win 2008 World Series
The Major League Baseball season starts this weekend and MySportsbook.com, a leading online sportsbook for over 8 years, is the first to offer baseball sports betting lines on who will win the 2007 World Series.

"The World Series is the biggest baseball event in the sports betting world and MySportsbook.com is excited that we are first to market with betting lines on every team," says Tim Dalton, Marketing Director, MySportsbook.com. "We are getting things ready for a great baseball season and our members are looking forward to our Player Payback Bonuses, as well as Dime Lines, all season long."

Going in to this weekend, MySportsbook.com's favorites to win the World Series are the New York Yankees at 7-2 and last year’s winners the Chicago White Sox at 9-2.

"These betting lines are ripe for the picking," Dalton added, "baseball fans know that the season is long and many factors, including players staying healthy, will affect these Future odds as the baseball season progresses. Betting on your favorite team in the beginning of the season could prove quite lucrative. We are seeing examples of this right now in the NCAA College Basketball Tournament with a lucky few that placed pre-season bets on George Mason to win it all. Anything can happen."

Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value

If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture.  Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).

For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot.  The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.

TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the  drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.

"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,'  it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."

"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.

Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash.  Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.
